Andy Millner has developed his studio practice over the past 20 years by re-imagining nature with a computer, a pen and a tablet. Beginning with simple outlines, a leaf, a petal, a tree branch, repeated and layered into complex compositions, Millner’s drawings conjure a natural space that is continuously recreating itself. The richness of these works lies in the invention that occurs as Millner recombines his drawings or parts of his drawings into new possible worlds.
Thrum, the title of this new body of work, figuratively describes the constant flow of his hand drawn lines connecting all of these stunning works. As Millner says “My task has been to discover the landscapes that these drawings infer. Each element, from the smallest to the largest, begins as a simple outline — a moment connecting me to an ephemeral, living thing. There is a level of serendipity when I take parts of one composition and combine them with another, emphasized by the cutting and sewing, leaving the shadows of their overlaps, not quite fitting together.”
