Most artists like to work in series.
Although each individual work may firmly stand on its own, its relationship to other works within the series gives it a context that strengthens its formal identity.
Rachel Hellmann newest acrylic paintings explore complex folding forms created by contiguous colored shapes within the confines of a rectangular sheet of white paper. These elastic yet solid paintings help her to leap from the paper to the solid poplar wood of her painted sculptures.
Ion Zupcu cuts paper to “recreate” memorable sculptures, transforming them into a colorful and playful theatre of forms. Zupcu winks at tradition, and nods at the power of the camera lens.
Heather McGill finds inspiration from many sources: Automotive Industry, High Fashion, and Oceanic Primitives. She redefines these patterns and forms creating a wholly new series of objects that are caringly sewn together with thread and beads.
Andrew Millner’s art is defined by the formal possibilities of line. He starts with a traditional line on paper and then expands its vocabulary by restating those lines with richly liquid acrylic paint. Millner’s acrylic “mimicking” of the line drawing beneath creates a hybrid that is neither a drawing nor a painting, but something entirely new.
