Rachel Hellmann: A Malleable Truth
DATE: January 5- February 1, 2018
LOCATION: 450 Harrison Ave #309
HOURS: By appointment
Rachel Hellmann’s work blurs the lines between sculpture and painting. Hellmann’s solid poplar wood forms are meticulously crafted. Through careful planning and design, these inflexible objects float and bend in a playful manner. The artist overlays her forms with a highly colored acrylic surface of hard edge geometric stripes, adding an unexpected dimension that tricks and confounds the viewer. We are happily forced to explore Hellmann’s pieces from all sides in order to unlock what is really spatial and what is painted. Hellmann continues to challenge and reward.
Rachel Hellmann received her M.F.A. from Boston University, and her B.F.A. from the University of Dayton, OH. She currently lives in Terre Haute, Indiana, working full-time on her art. Hellmann has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, most recently in a solo exhibition at Galleri Urbane, Dallas, and a group exhibition, Liminal, at Elizabeth Houston Gallery in New York, NY. Her work is included in a number of collections, including the Addison Gallery of American Art and the University of Maine Museum of Art.
Opening Reception Friday January 5th, 5-7 pm
